With some guilt I read this article, not fully knowing the historical background of Haiti's past. However, I have understood the Cuban history and have followed its progress/or lack thereof since my high school days in the 1960's.

Haiti, like Cuba has and still is a pawn of the USA and other less involved countries including Canada. Mr. Danner's article provides a clear understanding of Haiti's past, present earthquake state of emergency, and ideas for the future not to repeat itself.

Not being an expert in how to change a country's future direction, I would believe that there are many "experts" out there who can assist the Haitians to build a stronger tomorrow. The experts needs to unbiased, not connected to future monetary or political gain (are there any left in this world?)The Haitians, as Mr. Danner points out, are responsible in many ways for their present disruptive state of affairs; however, they had many "outside experts" holding their hand along the way.

I am so saddened to see the devastation today in Haiti. God or Voodoo beliefs did not cause the earthquake and resulting destruction, as some right-wing religious zealots would try to have the world believe. The earthquake was a "natural disaster, the aftermath was caused by people and years of raping the country and people of Haiti.

If there is a silver lining to the Haitian disaster, hopefully it will be that, the strong, peaceful and visionary people of Haiti and the non-self-serving governments and agencies around the world will collectively work together to make Haiti a strong and proud nation it deserves to be.

Bruce Wilson
Canadaflyingchefhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16822068022494441841noreply@blogger.com
