This baby was a patient of mine in clinic today.
He is 18 months old and weighs about 15 pounds. He is a combination marasmus/kwashiorkor with edema of his lower extremities.
When the other doctors realized his last name is the name of a powerful man in Haiti, they asked the baby's mother if she was related. She nodded yes and said that the baby is the nephew of the powerful Haitian man.
The Haitian doctors just laughed and wondered outloud how a powerful man could allow his newphew to be on the verge of death with severe malnutrition.
