Te in Soleil
The mudpies are called "te" in Creole.
The lady that makes them told me the dirt comes from Hinche and she mixes salt, sugar, butter, and water with the dirt.
She said the te help with acid reflux and are craved by pregnant women.
Jean-Claude, a friend of mine who grew up in Soleil, said that te did not exist during the Duvalier years and only appeared since Baby Doc left.
He also described life in Soleil as "sweet" when he was young (he is fifty years old now), but he says now the new generation in Soleil has "no respect for people with gray hair."
