Malaria and Mumps in Soleil

This little girl's malaria smear was positive for P. falciparum. I started her on a routine course of chloroquine.

Also, her parotid glands were enlarged and I wondered if she had mumps. Her left parotid gland was more swollen than the right. And it was tender to touch.

However, many diseases can cause the parotid glands to enlarge. I have not heard of malaria causing parotid gland enlargement.

She was the first of two patients I had yesterday with parotid gland enlargement and fever.

Any comments?

The cotton in the ears was to "stop the wind from entering". Her ears were fine and I replaced the cotton.
